BINTULU: Homelessness is a big issue that needs to be dealt with appropriately and holistically by all relevant agencies.
Accordingly, Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming informed that he will consult and discuss with the Bintulu Resident’s Office, Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), Community Welfare Department (JKM) Bintulu Division and other relevant agencies to find short-term derivatives to reduce problems pertaining to this increasingly urgent issue.
He said, in support of BDA’s efforts that aim to transform Bintulu into a beautiful city, the homeless issue is one of the core social problems that needs to be addressed holistically because it is not only a welfare issue but also a health issue.
“In this context, I will continue to monitor this problem and will continue to work with relevant parties and agencies, especially the Bintulu Resident’s Office, BDA and JKM Bintulu,” he said.
On Wednesday, Pang through Tanjong Batu State Assembly Service Centre staff together with BDA and JKM Bintulu Division succeeded in persuading and sending a homeless man back to his hometown in Song.
The action was taken after he received a complaint from a trader who informed that there are homeless people who often sit at the entrance of his shop thus blocking the road.
“The owner of the shop tried to drive him away, but was unsuccessful. Desperate, the shopkeeper asked for my help. After discussing and persuading the homeless man was finally sent back to his hometown in Song by express bus.
According to the Tanjong Batu assemblyman, he complained to him that the homeless people involved often wandered around the footpaths, and even slept in front of shop premises, causing people to feel uncomfortable.
“The shopkeeper hopes that the homeless person can be placed in a suitable place, so that he does not block the footpath and affect the business of the shop,” he pointed out.
