KUCHING: The proposed amendment to lower the voting age limit from 21 to 18 has received positive feedback from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders.
Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he was grateful and appreciative of the support from Sarawak leaders.
“I had the opportunity to meet with GPS chief whip Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Batang Sadong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri to discuss this agenda and they want to bring the voices of the young people,” he told reporters after a courtesy visit on Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg here yesterday.
He said among the matters discussed were sports development involving the cooperation between the federal government and its Sarawak counterpart.
“For instance, in the Batang Sadong area, the federal government already has the funds prepared, and only needs to wait for the land approval, which is under the jurisdiction of the Sarawak government,” Syed Saddiq said.
Meanwhile, he described Sarawak as a state that could be used as an icon of solidarity to the younger generation.
He also regarded Sarawak as his second home after Johor, as his political journey began in Sarawak under the leadership of Nancy.
“I always come to Sarawak, especially to Batang Sadong, and I hope this federal and state relationship will be closer.”
Meanwhile, Sarawak Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said his ministry had a good working relationship with the federal ministry, especially in organising youth and sports programmes.
“Whatever programme, we will organise it together. We are very familiar with this joint collaboration.”
