KUCHING: Students from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) joined Hope Place to deliver food aid to an underprivileged family in Puncak Borneo recently.
A total of 18 students from Swinburne Sarawak Institution of Engineering and Technology (SSIET) on campus and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia Swinburne Sarawak Section (IEM – SSS), together with Hope Place went to Kampung Giam at Puncak Borneo to deliver the assistance to a farmer, Tommy Buroi and his family.
This student group, led by SSIET chairman Chin Hau Zen, and IEM-SSS chairman Evelyn Mau Hui Qi, said they wanted to do some charitable activity to contribute to the local needy community.
The whole group hiked the hilly terrain for 30 minutes before reaching the house, carrying bags of 10kg rice, boxes of drinking water and other basic food items.
Tommy lives with his wife and son in a small house that has no electricity or water supply.
He is a small scale farmer, planting vegetables and fruits for their consumption as well as for sale at the nearby market at Kampung Giam when there is excess produce.
Hope Place has been helping this family since the year 2018.
Hope Place also thanked Swinburne University’s SSIET and IEM-SSS for their effort to involve in community work.
The non-governmental organisation (NGO) added its doors are always open, especially for students and youths who are willing to volunteer in helping the community.
