Swinburne Sarawak bags prestigious research awards

KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus business lecturers, in collaboration with the University of Science and Technology of China, have won the Most Innovative Research Award at the Research Poster Competition during the Global Business Leader Forum held on Nov 7 at UCSI Hotel Kuching.

The award-winning project, titled ‘The Greener Future: How Monetary Policy and Green Innovation Drive Clean Energy Investment in Malaysia and China’, was spearheaded by Dr Yii Kwang Jing, Dr Maggie Tang May Jean, and Dr Leong Choi Meng, together with Professor Wei Jiuchang and Dr Wan Liang from China.

The research employs advanced econometric methods to analyse the impact of monetary policy and green innovation on clean energy investments in Malaysia and China, two key emerging economies.

According to Dr Yii, the findings stresses the critical role clean energy strategies play in fostering global sustainable development.

“The findings demonstrate how clean energy strategies can bridge academic theory with practical solutions for businesses and policymakers,” said Dr Yii.

He added the research provides actionable insights to encourage businesses to adopt green technologies and sustainable practices, while also recommending policymakers enhance green financing, support research and development (R&D), and introduce incentives to drive sustainability efforts.

“This project aligns with Swinburne’s flagship research areas, particularly Innovative Society and Innovative Planet, which aim to lead social innovation, achieve a carbonneutral future, and integrate cutting-edge technology with social sciences to address global challenges like digital inclusion and sustainable energy management,” he explained.

In another notable achievement, a team comprising Swinburne Sarawak PhD student Joel Wong En Tong and his supervisors, Dr Yii, Dr Gabriel Wee Wei En, and Dr Eryadi Masli, won the Best Research E-Poster Award for their project, ‘Antecedents of Entrepreneurship towards SMEs Financial Performance: Missing Gap of Sustainability’.

The project explores how entrepreneurial traits influence the adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and their subsequent impact on the financial performance of Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The research portrays ESG as a crucial component for long-term value creation, offering practical insights for policymakers and SME leaders to address sustainability challenges effectively.

“As a PhD candidate at Swinburne Sarawak, this award reflects my commitment to equipping SMEs with the entrepreneurial mindset needed to navigate sustainability challenges,” said Wong.

“In today’s dynamic business environment, sustainability is no longer optional. Businesses must transition from profit-centric models to incorporating ESG principles into their operations,” he said.

The Research Poster Competition was a highlight of the Global Business Leader Forum, serving as a platform to showcase cutting-edge strategies and redefine business practices in accounting, finance, and other sectors.

The forum stressed the role of sustainability leadership in driving transformative initiatives for a greener future.
