KUCHING: Taekwondo, which was dropped from the previous Malaysia Games (SUKMA), will be back in SUKMA next year.
Taekwondo Malaysia (TM) president Azizul Annuar Adenan said the decision was made during a SUKMA meeting last month which was attended by Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Sarawak Sports Council (MSS) officials.
Azizul said taekwondo will be among the 26 sports contested in next year’s 2024 Malaysia Games which Sarawak will host.
“Taekwondo is an Olympic sport, it has good prospects for the country and that is also the reason why it has been reinstated in next year’s SUKMA,” he told the media during his Hari Raya open house in Santubong yesterday.
With the addition of taekwondo next year, Azizul hopes it will continue to be regularly featured in future Games.
“Taekwondo was previously listed in SUKMA and then the event was dropped and then it was reinstated again, I hope it could be a regular event just like the other sports,” he added.
Meanwhile, Azizul who is also Tanjung Datu assemblyman said that he is prepared to continue his tenure as the president of TM.
Azizul, who has been the TM president for five years, will face re-election in July this year at the association’s annual general meeting (AGM).
For the record, Sarawak hosted SUKMA in 1990 and 2016.
