VANCOUVER: The Mining Association of British Columbia has expressed interest in collaborating and investing in the development of the mineral industry in Sarawak.
During a meeting with the Canadian Mining Association in Vancouver led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan yesterday (June 7), the Sarawak delegation had engaged and shared insights with the Mining Association of British Columbia to aid in the formulation of Sarawak’s mining policy, strategies and direction, as well as the necessary legal and institutional framework.
“Sarawak aims to develop its mineral mining industry into a vibrant economy, adhering to the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“This is one of the key economic sectors under PCDS 2030,” it said in a statement.
Accompanying Awang Tengah were Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Sarawak Datuk Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Syed Aman Ghazali and other senior government officials.
British Columbia is the hub of mineral mining in Canada that contributed significantly to the Canadian economy.
The mining sector in British Columbia has created more than 40,000 jobs and generated USD7.4 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP), of which USD3.7 billion was spent for the development particularly to improve the livelihood of the First Nation People or the natives of Canada.
Furthermore, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Malaysia Consulate General office in Vancouver. The Consulate General of Malaysia will collaborate with the Sarawak Government to promote trade, investment, and tourism opportunities in Sarawak.
