KUCHING: Sarawak are entering 78 boxers for the five-day National Youth Boxing Championship beginning tonight at Kubah Ria here.
Sarawak Boxing Association (SABA) president Datuk Rahman Lariwoo said there are 30 categories in different age groups of between 13 and 18 years.
“Among the states participating are Johor, Perlis, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan.
“As for the hosts, 78 boxers from Limbang, Sibu, Kapit, Sri Aman, Serian, Asajaya and Samarahan are competing,” he told the New Sarawak Tribune.
Giving a pep talk to the boxers, Lariwoo urged them to give their best throughout the championship and replicate their achievement in Nilai last January.
“I hope they will repeat their best performance like their counterparts in Nilai last time and our target is certainly to win the championship,” he said.
Meanwhile, Lariwoo cash prizes, trophies and medals will be awarded in each category.
In addition, the best boxer and the boxer with best potential trophies are up for grabs.
Sarawak haves two national-level boxers representing Malaysia.
“I believe our boxers are great and hope that in the future, another Sapok Biki, Sarawak’s legendary boxer with a record held from 1998 until now, will emerge,” he said.
