MUKAH: A 54-year-old local man was arrested by Mukah police after a viral video showed him brandishing a gun at a Maybank ATM (automated teller machine) in the district.
According to Mukah District Police chief, Muhamad Rizal Alias, the incident occurred on January 23, 2025, at around 5 pm.
The 39-second video, uploaded by a Facebook user, captured the suspect entering the ATM premises and pointing a firearm inside.
Following public tip-offs, the police arrested the suspect later that night at around 9 pm and seized a black imitation pistol. Investigations are being carried out under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which pertains to imitation firearms.
Authorities revealed that the suspect is believed to be mentally unstable and has been remanded for four days until January 28. He will also be referred to psychiatric specialists at Bintulu Hospital for further evaluation.
