SIBU: The public are urged to show their gratitude to former navy personnel who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty of the country by contributing to the Warriors Day fund.
Dudong assemblyman Datuk Tiong Thai King said ex-navy personnel had sacrificed their lives to protect the sovereignty of the country.
“Some of them have perished while defending the country while some become persons with disability as they have lost their limbs. Due to their sacrifices, there is peace, harmony and stability in the country,” he said at the 12th Delegates Conference of Malaysian Navy Veteran Association yesterday,
The association, together with the Malaysian Armed Forces Veteran Association, is currently soliciting for public donation for the fund.
About 200 delegates from Sarawak, Kedah, Selangor, Penang, Pahang, Kelantan, Perlis, Melaka, Terengganu, Johore, and Labuan attended the one-day conference.
Tiong wanted the public to contribute to the fund which was for the welfare of the veterans, especially those suffering from the loss of their limbs. The fund is also to assist in their children’s education.
“I also hope the government will always be committed in supporting the veterans,” said Tiong who later contributed RM10,000 to the association.
The association’s national president Senator Mohd Imran Abdul Hamid also urged all elected representatives to support the Warriors Day fund.
Chairman for the state body, Thomas Ling urged all members to remain united.
“Avoid harping on political, racial and religious sentiments in the association. Whether you are from the state or national body, you must continue to be committed to serving in your respective association for the benefit of the members,” he added.
