KUCHING: The upgrading works at Sungai Apong Pasar Tamu under the ‘Program Pembangunan Premis (Tamu Desa) di Sarawak Fasa 2’ have been successfully completed at a cost of approximately RM235,135.19.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (KUSKOP), through the International Trade, Industry and Investment Ministry (MINTRED) and the Public Health, Housing and Local Government Ministry (MPHLG), was implemented by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to uplift the facilities and environment at the traditional market.
MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the project focused on enhancing the section of the market dedicated to jungle produce, including the installation of a new roof and ceiling, improvement of drainage systems, and upgrading of 10 stalls.
The improvements provide a cleaner, safer and more conducive environment for traders and customers alike.
“This initiative not only improves the physical infrastructure of Sungai Apong Pasar Tamu but also uplifts the image of traditional markets and promotes Sarawak’s unique jungle produce under the city’s gastronomy branding.
“In line with Kuching’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, MBKS is committed to providing conducive trading spaces and facilitating more effective marketing access for jungle produce.
“We believe in preserving our food heritage while supporting small traders who are the backbone of our local economy,” he said.
To support traders during the renovation period, he also added that MBKS waived all rental fees and water charges for the affected hawkers, easing their financial burden and ensuring business continuity throughout the project.
“The upgrading of Sungai Apong Pasar Tamu reflects our commitment to improving the socioeconomic conditions and quality of life for our hawkers.
“By creating a better environment for trade, we are investing in the sustainability and resilience of our local communities,” he added.
MBKS will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to enhance traditional markets and support grassroots entrepreneurship throughout Kuching South.
