KUCHING: Ummi Masitah Hassan, a women’s silat gold medallist from Marudi, made history by winning a silver medal at the 20th World Pencak Silat Championship held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The 21-year-old had previously claimed gold in the women’s Class B category at the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) on Aug 23 at the Miri Indoor Stadium.
Following her Sukma success, Ummi was invited by the National Silat Federation (PESAKA) to join the national team.
Her debut on the international stage proved her skill and determination, as she triumphed over Vietnam’s Le Thi Van Anh in the ‘Tanding Putri Kelas C Senior’ category.
To celebrate her remarkable achievement, the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) and the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) organised an appreciation ceremony at Imperial Palace Hotel here today (Dec 26).
For the record, Malaysia secured six gold, nine silver and four bronze medals at the championship.
The ceremony not only honoured Ummi Masitah’s success but also recognised the collective efforts in promoting and developing silat in Sarawak.
This achievement is hoped to inspire young athletes to continue bringing pride and glory to the state and nation on the international stage.
Also present at the ceremony were MSNS supervising officer Abdul Ajis Kon Mohamad Ghazali, vice-president 2 of Rumpun Silat Sarawak (RSS) Ismawi Kedri, RSS Miri president Madon Sulong, Sarawak chief coach Fadzil Jamain, and RSS Miri secretary Mohamad Azahar Bujang.
