KUCHING: The next leader of Sarawak must carefully study the economic landscape to ensure the state’s development efforts can continue in an ever-changing environment.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed the need for continuity while adapting to global changes, particularly in energy transition.
“There must be continuity. However, in continuing our efforts, we must consider the changing environment.
“Times will change, and we are now in the era of energy transition.
“My cabinet colleagues and I are focused on policies that position Sarawak to contribute to this transition,” he said during the ‘Eight years with Premier Sarawak’ townhall session at Hikmah Exchange and Event Centre Kuching last night (Jan 13).
Abang Johari recalled his early efforts to explore hydrogen energy as an alternative to fossil fuels.
He revealed that before becoming Chief Minister and Premier, he had studied hydrogen energy and traveled to Frankfurt to meet with scientists at Linde to discuss new energy sources.
The Premier explained that hydrogen is part of the water molecule and expressed his conviction that it is the cleanest energy source
“That is why I introduced hydrogen-powered public transport, making Sarawak a pioneer in this region,” he added.
He also noted Sarawak’s potential in emerging industries such as data centers and aerospace, which require sustainable energy solutions.
“I believe that what is important is the basic economy and how we view the changing economic climate.
“We must adapt ourselves to these economic changes. This means you have to update yourself with the latest knowledge that aligns with these changes.”
