SUBIS: Sports are an important part of a student’s school life. It helps student understand the value of competition from a young age while instilling a sense of commitment, determination and achievement, said Datuk Seri Dr. Stephen Rundi Utom, Minister of Food Industry, Commodities, and Regional Development.
He commended that Sarawak’s double victories in the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and Para Malaysia Games (Para SUKMA) were not mere coincidences, adding that the achievements were the result of sports activities exposure that began in school.
“Sports play a crucial role in promoting healthy competition and teamwork. Students can excel not only in sports but also in other areas, reflecting both performance and character development,” he said.
Rundi asserted that success in sports was not something that happens by chance. It was cultivated through committed personal development at the school level.
He said this during the 2024 Annual Sports Championship at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Rumah Goyang here, recently.
He acknowledged that in its 64 years of existence, SK Rumah Goyang has produced many successful professionals.
As such, he emphasised the importance of schools in nurturing students not only in academic excellence but also to instill a competitive spirit, determination, courage, responsibility and humility.
