Empowering emerging new fashion talents in Sarawak
Learning all the ins and outs on your own as you go along being a model is incredibly harder than being coached first. It is advisable to start your modelling career or even for those seeking a career refresher to enlist the guidance of a professional coach.
Style Series held a fashion show in mid-December at the Old Court House as the finale of their three-day intensive modelling workshop. The workshop, held in partnership with Runway Productions Malaysia, had a total of 45 participants ranging from 6 to 43 years old from all social backgrounds throughout Sarawak.
The trainers for the workshop were Yacub Taha of Style Series and Benjamin Toong of Runway Productions Malaysia. The workshop students were trained to walk and pose on the fashion runway as well as in fashion editorial photoshoots.
Yacub, the fashion guru in Kuching, is an all-rounder in the fashion industry since he started in the 1980s locally, then to London, Kuala Lumpur and eventually home to his roots.
From hairstyling and make-up, he has been a stylist for some famous celebrities, created and still creating fashionable styles for Tai Tais and those who simply want to keep up with fashion trends.
Benjamin Toong, who is the founder of Runway Productions, is also one of Malaysia’s most renowned catwalk guru. His modelling agency specialises in catwalk training, runway choreography, fashion styling, event production, and model and talent management.
The SL/AY Fashion Show featured a sensational collection by Malaysia’s upcoming and accomplished designers: Bev C (winner of KLFW Streetstyle Award), By Lhuna, Dickson Lim, Keith Sim, Kesya Fatin, Kiddo Concept, Outdwell, Sab2, Tactloungwear (by Topboi Citizen Founder TTFGA), Teecode and Yacutha.
Founder of Style Series, Geraldine Sim, said during the final day of their three-day intensive modelling workshop, “The students came in on the first day looking robotic, clueless and scared. Now everyone at the show will witness their rise from zero to hero.”
She also expressed her appreciation, thanking everyone, especially AirAsia and Pullman Kuching, for supporting them in empowering this next generation of Sarawakians through fashion.
“AirAsia always has their doors open for the youth of Sarawak by giving them career opportunities within their organisation. Now, everyone can SLAY!“ Sim said.
Supporting, elevating, and respecting the craft of the key people in our homegrown fashion industry were the models, designers, stylists, make-up artists, choreographers, trainers, videographers, photographers, graphic designers, deejays, emcees and TikTokers who are defining not just the future of fashion but the future of Sarawak, according to Sim.
The fashion event saw the models parading the outdoor walkways of the Old Court House, with the finale segment going into the garden of the courtyard.
From young kids to adults, each model their ‘New Gen‘ styles with confidence.
