Sarawak’s palm oil sector continues its upward trajectory, recording a total export value of RM3.62 billion in the first quarter of 2024.
“The remarkable growth in Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) production can be attributed to several factors, including enhanced labour supply and the expansion of mature palm areas. Sarawak boasts the largest oil palm planted area in Malaysia, spanning 1.62 million hectares,” said Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Stephen Rundi Utom during his Ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Tuesday (May 14).
Dr. Rundi also highlighted the diversification within Sarawak’s palm oil industry, noting the presence of five palm kernel crushing plants, six palm oil refineries and a biodiesel plant.
However, he pointed out that there are currently no oleochemical plants operating in the state, indicating potential avenues for future growth and investment.
