MIRI: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin has called on all contractors undertaking infrastructure works—particularly those involving underground utilities—to strictly follow safety protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to prevent incidents similar to the recent Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion.

Speaking after inspecting completed development projects at SK Merbau here today (Apr 7), Lee said the tragic incident in Putra Heights, Selangor, served as a stark reminder of the potential consequences when safety regulations are overlooked.

The Putra Heights incident, which occurred recently, involved the explosion of an underground gas pipeline during excavation works.

Lee emphasised that similar precautions must be enforced in areas such as the Quadruplex Taman Ceria (QTC) housing area in Permyjaya, which is equipped with underground gas pipelines.

“Contractors must strictly follow the SOPs—particularly those involving safety standards in gas pipeline installations. Every excavation, especially in areas with underground utilities, must be carried out only after receiving clearance and site information from the relevant utility agencies,” he said.

“They must be fully aware of the location of gas, water, and telecommunication lines before digging. This is to avoid any untoward incidents. It is mandatory for contractors to engage the relevant authorities to identify the precise positioning of these pipelines and cables.”

Lee stressed that the responsibility lies squarely with contractors to ensure all necessary approvals and site maps are obtained before work begins.
