KUCHING: A total of 450 Bakau kurap (Rhizophora mucronata) have been planted at Sejingkat Power Coastline in conjunction with the International Day for The Conservation of The Mangrove Ecosystem.
Forest Department of Sarawak (FDS) in its statement emphasised on the importance of mangrove ecosystem and that this planting effort not only helps in mangrove conservation but also to educate the younger generations about the importance of preserving the ecosystems.
“Concerning the important function of mangrove ecosystems, degradation and loss of mangroves can make significant and long-lasting impacts on environmental sustainability and human well-being.
“Adopted by the General Conference of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 2015, the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is celebrated every year on July 26 and aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses,” FDS said.
Organised by FDS and Sejingkat Power Corporation of Sarawak Energy Berhad (SPC), the planting programme was also run in connection with SEB’s Sarawak Energy Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign 2021-2030, in supporting Greening Sarawak Campaign led by FDS.
The event was also attended by FDS senior research officer, Biha Razali and SPC Station manager Ir. Mohd NarzamJaffar.
