KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has reiterated its stance on the ban on durian sales outside shop premises within its jurisdiction, emphasising that enforcement actions are ongoing.
Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the ban, along with the prohibition on illegal building extensions, is crucial for public safety and order.
“We don’t immediately resort to drastic measures,” Wee told reporters at the MBKS building today (Jan 10).
“We issue warnings and advise vendors to relocate to designated areas.”
Wee highlighted the provision of a seasonal fruit market in Tabuan Jaya as an example of MBKS’s efforts to provide a designated space for fruit vendors.
“We urge all fruit vendors to comply with council regulations,” he said.
“Operating in unauthorised locations is unfair to registered shop owners and leads to widespread littering.”
Wee stressed that all enforcement actions are based on legal guidelines to ensure public safety and maintain order.
“We want to create a level playing field for everyone,” he said.
“By gathering in a designated area, fruit vendors can attract more customers.”
Wee added that improvements have been made to the designated fruit market to enhance the market environment.
