KUCHING: Operators of illegal gambling have been told to cease and desist. Bau police chief Poge Nyaon said police would come down hard on the defiant.
He said some of the operators were openly selling illegal lottery tickets in coffee shops and markets.
Poge said Bau residents must work together with the police to put a stop to this social scourge.
Poge said those with information of buildings and premises being used as gambling dens should call the police and not act on their own.
On Thursday at about 4pm, police arrested a man, aged 37, and his wife, aged 33, both from Kalimantan for selling illegal lottery tickets at a business premises at 1 Singai, Tondong, Bau.
Seized from the duo were a handphone and RM72 in cash.
Both will be detained for further questioning and may be charged under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
Police are also checking to see if they had entered the state illegally.
