KUCHING: An astronomy centre to study the science of astronomy and galaxies will be established in the state.

“We want our Muslim children to learn astronomy so that they can help manage the world’s current situation, including climate change and so on.

“This is our effort to develop the ummah and dignify Muslims so that they can gain knowledge to lead the country in the future,” said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Knowledge of astronomy, he pointed out, was important because it had a lot of impact on people’s lives in various aspects.

“From my knowledge, when talking about astronomy, it cannot escape from the knowledge of stars, positions, interpretations related to stars and others.

“It is also linked to astrology, which is a prediction based on the study of the stars as to whether there will be rain, which is also likely to become a flood, affecting people’s daily activities.

“Thus, we can say that astronomy is closely related to life management, economic development and science as well as community development,” he said in his speech during the opening ceremony of the state-level Astronomy Seminar at the Islamic Information Centre (IIC) here today (Friday).

Abang Johari also urged young people to always be enthusiastic about acquiring knowledge.

“This is because our young people are our backbone and the next generation that will lead the state and the country.

“This is an opportunity for our young people to make use of themselves when they are young before old age comes. I am old. However, as long as I am Premier, I want to change Sarawak,” he said.
