KUCHING: The Malaysia Trade Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak division has welcomed government efforts to assist trade unions become key drivers of human capital development in the face of increasing challenges.
In a statement, MTUC Sarawak chairman Zaidi Nasar said the RM10 million increase in allocation to the Ministry of Human Resources, specifically for the implementation of the Trade Union Affairs Programme, will enable trade unions to seize this opportunity to provide beneficial training and programmes for union members.
“With the financial assistance provided through the programme, this will significantly support union activities and enhance worker productivity.
“Continuous learning introduced to trade unions will give workers the opportunity to strengthen their self-esteem and commitment to work values.
“At the same time, it will further enhance the governance of trade unions, making them more mature and progressive. In addition to producing leaders within trade unions with high knowledge, it will also serve as a foundation for the excellence of a trade union,” he said.
Zaidi stated the involvement of Minister Steven Sim, directly with trade unions and his hands-on approach in listening to workers’ issues is a highly appreciated effort by the workforce.
“This concept represents an excellent initiative to engage closely with the workers of this beloved nation,” he added.
In support of the Ministry’s efforts, throughout last year, Zaidi said MTUC Sarawak conducted numerous training sessions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing activities related to human capital development and workers’ rights, aligned with employment-related Acts.
“These efforts and initiatives would not have been successful without the commitment and assistance from departments under the Minsitry, which have consistently provided advice and guidance, particularly the Malaysian Trade Union Affairs Department and other relevant departments.
“It is hoped that trade unions will welcome and take advantage of this available allocation to further strengthen the trade union movement in Malaysia,” he added.
