KUCHING: Sarawak will host the state-level Chinese New Year (CNY) Open House 2025 on Jan 29, the first day of the celebration, at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said a formal press release with more comprehensive details would be issued on Jan 22.
“The open house will run from 9am to 2pm, with Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar as the guest of honour. Our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, along with Cabinet members, will also attend and celebrate with the rakyat during this Anak-Anak Sarawak event,” said Dr Sim.
He made the announcement after officiating at the light-switching ceremony at the Padungan White Cat Statue here today (Jan 20).
The ceremony is part of efforts to enliven the festive atmosphere for the upcoming Chinese New Year.
Earlier, Dr Sim officiated similar ceremonies at the Stutong Community Market, Kuching South City Council, and Petanak Market.
“These LED decorations bring a festive atmosphere, not only for those celebrating Chinese New Year but also for those returning to Kuching or visiting during the holidays,” he said.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng meanwhile urged city residents to play an active role in building their city.
“Kuching does not belong solely to the city council or government. We need everyone to work together so we can move forward,” he said.
Wee also praised the community’s spirit of engagement, noting that tenants in Padungan voluntarily donated lanterns to decorate the area, enhancing its vibrancy for the festive season.
Also present were deputy mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili and MBKS councillors.
