KUCHING: Sarawak women’s cricket team has cemented their name in the history books after winning the 2024 MCA Women’s T20 Interstate Championship after besting Selangor in the final match with an impressive 44-run victory yesterday (Jan 3).

The win marked the culmination of a journey filled with grit, determination, and resilience from the start of the competition.

As the campaign began with a commanding 8-wicket win over Sabah in their Group B opener, a performance that sent a clear signal of intent. However, Sarawak faced a setback in their second match against Selangor, suffering a 7-wicket defeat.

Undeterred, they used the loss as an opportunity to regroup and refine their approach. Their turnaround was evident in the final group match, where they delivered a hard-fought 21-run victory over Negeri Sembilan to secure their place in the knockout rounds.

The quarter-finals saw the team’s full potential on display as they swept past Pahang with a dominant 10-wicket victory. They continued their fine form in the semi-finals, overcoming Johor by 7 wickets, and confirming their spot in the decider.

The final proved to be the perfect culmination of Sarawak’s superb tournament. Kabita Kunwar was named Player of the Final for her stellar all-round performance.

She contributed a brilliant 52 runs off 48 balls, backed by a disciplined bowling spell of 3 wickets, 6 runs, and 1 maiden over in 4 overs. Her all-round brilliance was key to Sarawak’s commanding win.

The MCA Women’s T20 Interstate Championship, which ran from Dec 28, 2024, to Jan 3, 2025, proved to be a highly competitive and thrilling tournament.

Sarawak’s journey through the rounds, marked by their never-say-die attitude, had not only secured them the title but also showcased the growing potential of women’s cricket in Malaysia.
