RAJANG: A total of RM30 million has been approved by the state government for the development of artificial reefs for both commercial and sport fishing.

The development of these artificial reefs will be carried out by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) along the coast of Kampung Rajang.

Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh spoke of the development of artificial reefs in conjunction with the 17th edition of the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) Fishing Safari which took place in Tanjung Manis.

Speaking during the programme held recently, Len, who is also Kuala Rajang assemblyman said he entrusted the responsibility of safeguarding the area to the residents of Kampung Rajang.

He said the artificial reefs aim to preserve and sustain marine life resources in the waters of Kuala Rajang and ensure a continuous source of livelihood for fishermen.

Furthermore, the initiative is also part of SFC’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme for the local community and part of the RM70 million artificial reefs programme that is actively being implemented across the waters of Sarawak.
