KUCHING: The Sarawak Timber Association (STA) honoured the late Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud through the launching of a book titled ‘A Tribute to
Taib Mahmud’, which celebrates Taib’s Iife and achievements.
The book, launched by STA chairman Datuk Henry Lau at STA building today chronicles Taib’s extraordinary journey, from his early life education to his transformative tenure as chief minister(1981-2014).
STA chief executive officer Annie Ting said the book also explores his instrumental role in the formation and restructuring of STA in 1988, a milestone that united diverse industry stakeholders under one banner.
“This strategic move strengthened collaboration and policy alignment, charting the growth of the timber industry,” she said.
Additionally, Ting added that unveiling of the commemorative photograph of Taib officiating the opening of Wisma STA, now displayed in the lobby, and the launch of the book stand as enduring symbols of STA’s gratitude and recognition of his remarkable leadership.
The ceremony was attended by his family members, including Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib and Datul Hanifah Hajar Taib, as well as STA advisor Datuk Hamden Mohammad and STA council members.
Taib passed away on Feb 21, 2024 at the age of 87.
Serving three terms as the Governor of Sarawak from March 1, 2014, until Jan 26 of this year, he left an indelible mark on the state’s political landscape.
His legacy includes an unprecedented 33-year tenure as Sarawak’s chief minister, from 1981 to 2014, making him the longest-serving head of government in Sarawak’s history.
He assumed the role of chief minister when he was 45 years old in 1981, shaping the course of Sarawak’s development.
