KUCHING: Nearly 5,000 faithful gathered at the newly builtSt Peter’s Church hosts historic first Christmas midnight mass to celebrate its first-ever Christmas midnight mass last night.
The mass was a historic moment for the local Roman Catholic community, uniting thousands in faith, joy, and reflection while celebrating the birth of Christ.
Excitement filled the air hours before the gates opened at 9pm, of which saw many attendees arrive as early as 6pm, forming long queues outside the church while admiring the beautiful church’s Gothic architecture.
When the gates finally opened, the eager crowd surged in to secure their spots inside, with authorities and churchwardens managing the flow of people.
Many were in awe as they entered the church and captivated by the church’s spectacular interior, especially its stained-glass windows that beautifully illustrated scenes from the life of Jesus.
By 9.30pm, the church’s interior, which can accommodate over 1,000 worshippers, was already filled to capacity.
For those outside, seating and large screens were arranged to ensure everyone could join the celebration.
The atmosphere grew more solemn and uplifting as the church choir began singing Christmas hymns at 11pm.
Their harmonious melodies filled the sacred space, creating an aura of peace and anticipation for the midnight celebration.
At the stroke of midnight, the service began with an opening prayer and a blessing of the church’s entrance by Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching Datuk Dr Simon Poh, marking the church’s soft opening.
Archbishop Poh also delivered a deeply moving homily, reflecting on the spirit of Christmas and its message of hope, love, and unity.
Joining him in the mass were the church’s Rector Rev Father Vincent Chin, and Father Galvin Richard Ngumbang.
Throughout the service, the grandeur of the new church enhanced the spiritual experience.
Later, the mass concluded at nearly 2am, after which attendees were invited to remain for half an hour to take photos and admire the beauty of the church.
Christmas morning services were also held today at the new church, with masses at 7.30am and 5.30pm.
