KUCHING: Sarawak Society for the Deaf (SSD) has published its second edition of its Understanding Deaf Culture book, aimed at bridging the gap between the hearing and deaf communities through greater awareness and understanding of deaf culture and sign language.
Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah officiated at the book’s launch at the SSD Building last night, describing the initiative as a noble effort.
“We hope that the second edition of the book will help more people in society learn about the culture and community of the deaf.
“What we want is through greater understanding and awareness, we can foster inclusivity, respect, and effective communication within our diverse communities,” she said.
Meanwhile, SSD chairman Dr Jason Lim said the launching of the book serves as more than just a collection of words on paper – it’s a bridge to understanding, a beacon of awareness, and a celebration of the deaf culture.Fatimah (fourth left) flips through the pages of the second edition of Understanding Deaf Culture.
“This book is an invitation to step into the world of deaf individuals, to see life through their perspective, and to discover the incredible richness of their culture.
“It’s a world where silence speaks louder than words, where hands and facial expressions convey the most profound emotions, and where resilience and creativity shine in the face of challenges,” he said.
He also pointed out the book’s power to change mindsets and urged readers to rethink the meaning of inclusion.
“It’s not about pity or token gestures; it’s about genuine respect, understanding, and breaking down barriers.
“When we choose to see the person beyond their hearing ability, we open doors to deeper connections, richer experiences, and a more compassionate society,” he said.
The second edition, Understanding Deaf Culture 2.0, delves into Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM), deaf culture, the challenges faced by the deaf community, and stories from Friends of the Deaf (FOD).
The first edition, published in November 2022, covered the history of SSD, deaf lifestyles, cultural differences, practical communication tips, and volunteer stories supporting the deaf community.
