SS visits flood victims

BINTULU: State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki visited the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at the Civic Centre here yesterday (Feb 6) to assess the conditions of flood victims taking shelter there.

His visit came as the flood situation improved, with most of evacuees returning to their homes.

During the visit, Abu Bakar also witnessed the handover of financial aid from the Bintulu Port Foundation, which contributed RM25,000 to the Bintulu Division Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) and RM10,000 to Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu Campus.

In addition, essential supplies were distributed to evacuees at the PPS to help ease their burden.

The State Secretary also encouraged the remaining evacuees to remain resilient during this challenging time while prioritising their well-being and that of their families.

He noted the recent flood here has not only damaged homes and property but has also impacted basic school supplies.

Among those present were Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Datuk Buckland Bangik, Bintulu Resident Datuk Nyurak Keti, Permanent Secretary to the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Jafri Lias, and Sarawak Irrigation and Drainage Department director Datuk Ahmad Denney Ahmad Fauzi.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee reported that the PPS at Bintulu Civic Centre has remained operational since Jan 29.

As of 12 pm today, the number of flood victims sheltering at the centre stands at 891.
