KUCHING: Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) school-leavers are being encouraged to enrol in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programmes.

Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen stressed the importance of STEM education, highlighting ongoing efforts by both state and federal governments to promote these fields.

Chong noted that STEM programmes offer an excellent platform for students who may not have excelled in their SPM examinations, providing a more hands-on learning experience.

“Right now, we are in need of more scientists and technical person to boost the economy. And the job opportunities are there.

“STEM is one of the options for those who did not excel in the past academics, as well as those who excel and have interest in science.

“It is also a great avenue to explore, especially given that we are in the next phase of development for Malaysia and Sarawak,” he told a press conference held to announce the SPM Reward Scheme programme at the DAP Sarawak headquarters here today.

He said SPM is one of the most difficult examinations as it involves a lot of academic work and not much on the practical work.

“My advice to all the SPM leavers is to consider STEM as it is a very vast area that should be given consideration as it aligns with the future of our economy,” he added.
