Q: How has travel taught you to adapt when life doesn’t go as planned, and how do you maintain balance during those moments?
A: Travelling to 45 countries over the course of my life has been more than just a journey through diverse landscapes; it has become a masterclass in embracing the unpredictable. My first international experience was a family trip to Bangkok in 1980 when I was six years old. Even then, I sensed that travel was an unpredictable adventure.
As the Tibetan proverb goes, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” Each destination I’ve explored has been a chapter filled with unexpected twists and invaluable lessons in adaptability.
Travelling has taught me that when life doesn’t follow the script, reacting with patience and creativity is crucial. Whether it’s a language barrier in a bustling market or a sudden change in weather disrupting plans, I’ve learned to welcome the unexpected as a part of the journey. This attitude transforms potential setbacks into opportunities for unexpected discoveries.
To maintain balance during these unpredictable moments, I rely on a few foundational practices:
Mindfulness + Presence
I remind myself to be present and appreciate the moment, no matter how divergent it seems from my plans. This openness often reveals hidden gems I might have overlooked.
Flexibility + Resourcefulness
Like the saying, “Blessed are the flexible, for they shall never be bent out of shape,” travel has instilled in me the value of flexibility. Remaining resourceful and keeping an open mind often lead me to creative solutions and enrich my experiences.
Self-Reflection + Rest
Balancing the chaos with moments of reflection ensures that I remain grounded. Taking time to rest and process my experiences helps recharge my spirit, keeping me ready for whatever comes next.
Are there specific places you’ve visited that reminded you of the importance of slowing down and savouring the present?
In Tokyo, Japan, while I was with my family, the contrast between the bustling city life and the serene, traditional areas encouraged me to pause and appreciate the moment. The beauty of taking part in a tea ceremony and strolling through tranquil gardens was a powerful reminder to be present and enjoy the simple pleasures.
Similarly, in Korea, both Seoul and Jeju Island offered unique experiences of slowing down. In Seoul, I was struck by the harmony between the fast-paced urban environment and historical sites that invite calmness. It was the time spent with loved ones that truly reminded me of the value in cherishing the present. Sharing meals, stories, and laughter with family created an environment where I felt entirely present and grateful for each moment.
Jeju’s natural landscapes, where I spent quality time with family, reiterated the importance of connecting with nature and loved ones, enhancing the feeling of living in the moment.
The visit to St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, Rome, was profound in its historical and spiritual significance. It inspired a deep sense of reflection, encouraging me to pause amidst its stunning architecture and rich history.
Medjugorje, a town in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was another impactful place, where the emphasis was on prayer and self-reflection. It was a transformative experience that reinforced the value of silence and introspection.
Lastly, spending four hours in four evenings in adoration at St. James Church allowed me to embrace stillness and cultivate gratitude to our Almighty, enriching my understanding of how important it is to slow down and be present.
Can you share a travel experience where you felt a deep spiritual connection or sense of divine guidance?
My journey began on November 11, 2023, as I arrived in Rome, full of anticipati
itude, appreciation of the gift of life, and, of course, curiosity. However, this excitement was quickly dampened by a moment of unexpected — I was pickpocketed upon my arrival.
In the past, this might have rattled me, but in that moment of loss, I instead found peace within, guided by my faith in the Lord. I realised that every challenge held a lesson and a process to trust in the divine guidance.
Embracing this newfound peace allowed me to appreciate the beauty that lay beyond material possessions.
I attended daily Mass two hours later after the incident. After Mass, I went to the police station and then wandered through the ancient streets of Rome with a renewed spirit, feeling protected and guided by our Heavenly Father. This sense of divine connection deepened my journey, turning what could have been a frustrating experience into a beautiful testament to faith.
Two days after Rome, without any prior plan, I felt inspired to visit Turin, a city I had not considered before. It was here that I encountered one of the highlights of my spiritual pilgrimage — the Basilica di Maria Ausiliatrice and St. John Bosco Museum and his relic in the Basilica of Maria Ausiliatrice. Standing before its grandeur, I was filled with awe and reverence. The serenity and sanctity of this place enveloped me, reaffirming my belief that I was exactly where I needed to be.
Have you ever faced challenges while travelling that tested your resilience? How did those moments shape your outlook on life?
Yes, I’ve encountered challenges while travelling that tested my resilience. One notable instance was during a trip to Paris, France, when I was pickpocketed on a boat ride, losing my wallet along with important documents and credit cards. The incident initially left me feeling vulnerable and stressed, as I realised the immediate impact it had on my travel plans.
Faced with the setback, I had to quickly compose myself and take necessary actions. First, I reported the incident to the local authorities and to the boat company, hoping there might be a chance to recover my belongings. Although there was no immediate success, the process taught me the importance of staying calm and proactive.
I then contacted my bank and credit card to report the loss and secure my accounts, ensuring no unauthorised transactions could take place. Issuance of a new credit card on the same day through priority banking of HSBC. This experience underscored the value of having backup identification and payment methods, which I fortunately had in my hotel room.
This challenge not only tested my resilience but also reshaped my outlook on life. It taught me to approach unexpected situations with a problem-solving mindset rather than panic. I learned to appreciate the kindness of strangers and the efficiency of systems that are in place to help travellers in distress.
The experience also emphasised the importance of being prepared and flexible. While it was a frustrating situation, it reminded me that material items can be replaced, but the lessons learned from overcoming adversity are invaluable. These moments highlighted the strength in adaptability and the positive impact of human kindness, encouraging me to remain optimistic and resourceful in the face of challenges.
Overall, this incident has made me more cautious and prepared while travelling but also more appreciative of the journey and the learning experiences it brings.
Which destinations have inspired you to see life’s imperfections as beautiful and meaningful?
Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly the city of Mostar, deeply inspired me to view life’s imperfections as beautiful and meaningful. Mostar is a place where history is palpable, and its iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge) stands as a symbol of resilience and unity. Although the city bears the scars of its turbulent past, it’s precisely these imperfections that tell a powerful story of healing and hope.
The city’s unique blend of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences reflects a complex yet beautiful tapestry of human experience. Witnessing the locals’ unwavering spirit, as they continue to rebuild and celebrate their heritage, taught me that imperfections can lead to profound beauty and understanding.
What’s a seemingly small or simple moment during your travels that left a lasting impression on you?
During my travels, a simple encounter with a street vendor left a lasting impression on me. It was in a bustling market, where the air was filled with the aroma of spices and the chatter of locals. I stopped at a small stall, drawn by the vibrant colours of handcrafted goods in Tunis, Tunisia.
The vendor, an elderly woman with a warm smile, greeted me with genuine kindness. Although we spoke different languages, she patiently explained the stories behind each item through gestures and expressions. Her pride in her craft was evident as she shared how each piece was made with love and tradition.
Despite the simplicity of the moment, I was touched by her dedication and openness. It reminded me of the beauty in human connection and the stories that unite us, transcending language barriers. This brief interaction taught me about humility, cultural richness, and the importance of cherishing meaningful connections, even in passing.
How has exploring other cultures deepened your faith or enriched your spiritual journey?
Exploring other cultures has profoundly deepened my faith and enriched my spiritual journey in several ways. As a Catholic, witnessing the diverse expressions of faith and spirituality around the world has illuminated the universality and beauty of God’s creation.
Each culture brings a unique perspective to the mysteries of our faith, highlighting that while traditions and practices may vary, the core of our belief in God’s love and mercy is steadfast. Observing how people from different backgrounds live out their faith with devotion and reverence has inspired me to appreciate the richness of our Catholic heritage even more.
One significant lesson I’ve learned is about the humility and simplicity with which many people approach their faith. Whether it’s participating in a vibrant Mass abroad or observing a quiet moment of prayer in a small chapel, I’m reminded of the power of genuine devotion and the presence of God in every corner of the world.
Additionally, experiencing different cultural interpretations of Scripture has broadened my understanding and empathy, encouraging me to embrace a more inclusive view of God’s kingdom. It showcases the divine tapestry of humanity, woven together through love and grace.
These experiences have reinforced my commitment to living a life of compassion, service, and unity. By encountering Christ in the faces of people from diverse backgrounds, I’ve come to a deeper appreciation of the Catholic call to see and serve Jesus in all people, fostering a sense of global Catholic unity and solidarity.
Do you intentionally seek destinations or activities that foster introspection and a deeper connection to God?
In the past two years, I’ve become more intentional about choosing travel destinations and activities that foster introspection and deepen my connection to God. A core part of this journey involves ensuring that wherever I go, I can attend daily Mass, which is a vital aspect of my spiritual life.
When planning trips, I make it a priority to find accommodations near churches that offer daily Mass. This decision allows me to maintain my spiritual rhythm and stay anchored in my faith, no matter where I am. The opportunity to participate in the Eucharist daily is central to my spiritual nourishment and growth.
Moreover, this intentionality has influenced my travel choices significantly. I remember planning a trip to Cambodia, but upon discovering that I couldn’t find a church offering daily Mass in the city I needed to visit, I chose to cancel the trip. This decision reflects my dedication to nurturing my relationship with God and prioritising spiritual fulfilment over travel plans.
By aligning my travels with my spiritual goals, I’ve been able to experience a more profound sense of peace and purpose. This approach ensures that my journeys are not only explorations of the world but also profound explorations of my faith and relationship with God. Through these experiences, I continue to grow in understanding, faithfulness, and devotion, carrying the presence of God with me wherever I go.
Has travel ever changed how you define “richness” or “success” in life?
Travel has profoundly shifted my understanding of what it means to be “rich” or “successful,” leading me to view these concepts through a more spiritual and humble lens.
Embarking on journeys to different parts of the world, I’ve been blessed to witness the simple yet profound joy found in communities with seemingly little in material wealth but abundant in spirit, love, and contentment. These encounters have taught me that true richness lies not in possessions but in the depth of gratitude, relationships, and inner peace.
Through travel, I have seen acts of kindness, generosity, and love in places where resources are scarce, yet hearts are full. This revelation encourages me to align my sense of success with these virtues, striving to be rich in compassion, faith, and service, rather than merely material achievements.
Success, therefore, is no longer defined by status or accolades but by the capacity to contribute positively to others’ lives, grow spiritually, and walk the path that God has set before me with humility and grace.
Each journey reinforces the belief that our time on this earth is a pilgrimage, and true success is measured by how closely we walk with God and how we reflect His love in our interactions with others.
Are there any landscapes, cities, or traditions that have illuminated your understanding of divine wisdom or life’s purpose?
Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland
Auschwitz-Birkenau stands as a profound symbol of the depths of human cruelty but also the resilience of the human spirit. Walking through this sombre place, I’m struck by the lessons of remembrance, forgiveness, and the urgent necessity for compassion and empathy in our world. The divine wisdom found here is a call to honour those who suffered, ensuring their stories guide us toward a future anchored in justice and peace. Life’s purpose is distilled into a commitment to remember, learn, and strive for a world free from hatred.
Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina
In Medjugorje, particularly at Apparition Hill, there’s a tangible aura of peace and spiritual reflection. Known for Marian apparitions, this sacred site invites pilgrims to engage deeply in prayer and introspection. It illuminates the divine wisdom of seeking serenity amidst chaos and fosters a sense of connection with the divine. In this peaceful village, the purpose of life seems intricately linked to finding inner tranquillity and sharing love and compassion with others.
Wadowice in Poland
In Wadowice, the birthplace of Saint John Paul II, I find inspiration in the legacy of a leader who championed faith, hope, and love. The town’s rich history and traditions highlight the importance of grounded values and relentless compassion. Saint John Paul II’s life emphasises divine wisdom in resilience, empathy, and service. It teaches that life’s purpose involves a dedication to uplifting others, advocating for peace, and living with humility and strength.
