KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has solidified its commitment to the space industry with the official establishment of the SpaceTech Malaysia Association (SMA), a national body dedicated to driving the country ambitions in the growing global space economy.

The association, which recently held its inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM), is set to play a critical role in aligning industry efforts with national space policies.

Chairman Datuk Dr Sean Seah said SMA serves as a unifying platform, bringing together key stakeholders, including space industry players, government agencies, academic institutions and investors, both local and international.

“Its formation marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s journey towards establishing itself as a space technology leader in the region.

“The establishment of SMA is in line with the government’s National Space Policy 2030 and the Malaysia Space Exploration 2030 (MSE2030) framework, which outlines several strategic focus areas.

“They are Satellite Sovereignty and Infrastructure, reducing reliance on foreign networks by expanding domestic satellite capabilities, and Aerospace and SpaceTech industry growth, and empowering local companies to develop high-value technologies.

“Others include Space Data & National Security, leveraging geospatial data for disaster management, climate resilience and national security, and global collaboration, enhancing Malaysia’s role in space diplomacy and deep-space exploration.

He stressed the economic and security importance of space technology, stating, “Space is no longer just about exploration – it is a strategic and economic necessity.

“Malaysia must act decisively to secure its place in the global space sector,” he said.

On another note, Seah said SMA is set to act as a catalyst for industry growth.

To elevate Malaysia’s standing in the global space industry, he said SMA has launched six key initiatives, including the development of national satellite infrastructure, innovation in AI-integrated space applications and fostering international partnerships.

“Malaysia will also be represented at major global space events, including the 76th International Astronautical Congress in Sydney and the Asia-Pacific Satellite Communications Council (APSCC) Summit in Taipei.

“SMA’s efforts align with Malaysia’s broader goal of becoming a significant player in the global space economy, which is projected to surpass USD1 trillion by 2040.”
