KUCHING: The SWK Sluggers’ triumph at the Basba President’s Cup 2024 in Brunei recently (Dec 15) serves as proof of the consistent development efforts driving Sarawak softball’s success.

The team secured a 3-1 victory over Black Arrows 1 in the final, a hard-fought win against a strong opponent.
“Brunei has always been a tough benchmark for us,” Aaron Abel Donald, Head Coach and President of the Sarawak Softball Association (SSA) told Sarawak Tribune.

“Their tournaments are highly competitive, attracting teams from Indonesia, West Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and the Philippines. It’s invaluable experience for our players.”

Aaron said a statewide approach was instrumental to player development.

“This victory is a testament to years of hard work across the state. Our players hail from Miri, Bintulu, and Kuching. Nine of them were part of the recent SUKMA team in August, and this is part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing talent.

“We hope this experience will propel these players to greater heights in future major tournaments like SUKMA 2026 and the SEA Games,” he said.

For Aaron, this victory held a special significance.

“Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, praise the Lord – this is it! After 14 years of participating in Brunei’s tournament as both a player and coach, we’ve finally emerged as champions. This victory is especially significant as it’s our first time winning in Brunei,” he added.
