Smuggling attempt thwarted by GOF

BAU: The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) Brigade succeeded in thwarting an attempt to smuggle out RM112,000 worth of red onions on Thursday (May 14).

According to the 11th Battalion commanding officer Supt Rosdi Inai, the attempt was made via an illegal road access (‘elephant road’) in Kampung Stass, Bau.

He said the attempt to smuggle the goods was foiled by six personnel from the 11th Battalion and Bau police special branch in an ‘Ops Benteng Covid’ around 8.45pm.

“We have arrested a local man and a lorry carrying 320 sacks of red onions worth RM112,000 and believed to be smuggled out to a neighbouring country.

“Further inspection found that the 31-year-old driver failed to produce any legal document for the items,” he said in a statement.

Rosdi both the suspect and seized goods have been handed over to Bau district police headquarters for further investigation under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961 as well as violation of Rule 7 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases 2020.

If convicted, the individual could be fined up to RM100,000 or up to three years’ imprisonment or both. Whereas for offences in violation of the movement control order (MCO), the offender can be fined up to RM1,000 or an imprisonment of not more than one month.
