SMK Tong Hua, SJKC Ming Tak win recycling campaign

SIBU: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tong Hua emerged victorious in the secondary school category, while SJKC Ming Tak claimed the top spot for primary schools in the School Recycling Campaign 2023 for Sibu-Sarikei Zone.

In second place for the secondary school category was SMK Methodist followed by SMK Tiong Hin (third), SMK Chung Hua (fourth) and SMK Bandar Sibu in fifth place.

For the primary school category, SJKC Chung Hien secured second place, SJKC Hang Kwong came in third, SJKC Dung Sang claimed the fourth position, and SJKC Nang Kiang secured fifth place.

The winning schools received a cash prize of RM1,000, while the second-place winners received RM800, RM600 for third place, and RM300 each for the fourth and fifth places.

The programme involved 32 schools and 16,671 primary and secondary students under the jurisdiction of Sibu Municipal Council, Sibu Rural District Council, Sarikei District Council, and Maradong and Julau District Councils.

Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee officiated at the prize presentation ceremony at Sibu Islamic Complex here today (Jan 17).

According to Tiang, the objective of the programme is to improve the knowledge of students on the importance of recycling.

“It is also to cultivate the spirit of recycling practices among students and the community, install positive behavioral changes continuously among the students, especially on recycling and respond to the government’s call to raise public awareness on the importance of recycling,” he said.

He congratulated all the winners and encouraged more schools to participate in the programme in the future.

Also present was Sibu Division Resident Datuk Wong Hee Sieng.
