KUCHING: Who says good luck and tradition cannot be a little fun and creative?
At SMK Sungai Maong, a few balloons and a dash of Sarawakian ingenuity brought the festive spirit alive for Chinese New Year — all while staying within school regulations.
How you may ask?
Instead of traditional firecrackers — symbolic for good fortune and scaring away evil spirits — teachers and staff found a safer, noise-friendly alternative, a “firecracker” made entirely of balloons!
The ingenious setup featured balloons strung together and threaded through the mouth of a snake-shaped contraption.
With a pull of the string, the balloons burst in rapid succession, perfectly mimicking the iconic firecracker sound.
To top it off, the snake’s tongue popped out in a playful finale, symbolising the school’s creative goodbye to the academic year.
Shared on the school’s Facebook page on Jan 17, the video quickly went viral, winning hearts and sparking admiration from netizens.
Comments poured in praising the staff and teachers creativity and innovative spin on tradition, with many noting how closely the balloon-popping resembled the real firecrackers.
So, what’s the takeaway?
Education isn’t just about textbooks — it’s where creativity, innovation, and a little festive fun can make magic happen!
