KUCHING: A second intensive training programme, aimed at equipping aspiring semiconductor professionals with industry-relevant skills has been held here.
Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor oversaw the completion of the second cohort of its SMD Semiconductor Mastery Programme for Analog Integrated Circuit (IC) Design and IC Test Solution Development.
Building on its first cohort, which commenced in Feb 2024 and concluded in Sept 2024, the second batch refined and expanded its curriculum, providing participants with comprehensive training in IC design, layout, and testing.
The programme was made possible through strategic partnerships with industry leaders, including Melexis NV, X-FAB Sarawak, and Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs).
These collaborations offered participants valuable industry insights, hands-on training, and mentorship, further enhancing their readiness for the workforce.
State Financial Secretary and Chairman of SMD Semiconductor, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, applauded the participants for their dedication and highlighted the programme’s significance in building a skilled workforce.
“The programme’s success marks another significant step in equipping our young talents with the specialised skills required for the industry’s evolving demands.
“By investing in talent development, we are fostering a strong ecosystem that supports innovation, economic growth, and high-value job creation,” he said.
Encouraged by the programme’s impact, SMD Semiconductor has announced the launch of its third cohort in October 2025.
The next intake will feature enhanced training modules, expanded industry partnerships, and specialised courses in emerging semiconductor technologies.
Additionally, SMD will introduce a new Digital IC Design training course under the Semiconductor Mastery Programme, which is tentatively set to begin in August 2025.
“We remain committed to developing top-tier semiconductor talent, and the third cohort will take things even further.
“Building on the success of the first two cohorts, we are bringing in more industry expertise and hands-on learning to ensure our participants are fully equipped to thrive in this fast-evolving industry,” said Shariman Jamil, the Chief Executive Officer of SMD Semiconductor.
