SIBU: Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, will submit a proposal to the relevant authorities and ministries for the establishment of a smart classroom at a school in the Pelawan constituency.

Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman, said he plans to begin with Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Su Lai with an expected amount of RM300,000.

“No promise, but I will submit my application and letter to the relevant authority to fight for a smart classroom, 28 classrooms, the whole school.

“If I want to do it, I will do it for the whole school,” he told reporters during a visit to the school today.

He stressed the importance of smart classrooms in promoting students’ interest in learning.

“Smart classrooms have interactive screens and audio.

“I think children today are different; they’ve been exposed to the Internet and interactive videos from a young age.

“With this sort of classroom, I think it is time for us to promote and implement the concept,” he said.

Tiang noted that several schools in Kuching already have smart classrooms, and expressed hope that similar development could take place in Pelawan.

Meanwhile, on the school’s basketball court, which also functions as the assembly area, he pointed out that it has a high roof that does not effectively shield the space from rain.

“We are looking into possible solutions. We suggested building a basketball court with louvres to prevent rainwater from coming in.

“Of course, it’s not 100 per cent effective, but it would help improve the situation.

“If the solution works, I will find a way to support the improvement of the facility,” he said.

During his visit, Tiang also announced an allocation of RM200,000 to cover the drain in front of the school to create more space for vehicles during student pick-up times.

“Once it is covered, there will be no more congestion.

“This is a win-win situation – for traffic, for the parents, and for the school and students,” he added.

Tiang also announced an allocation of RM100,000 for the school’s toilet upgrading.
