Slight increase in accident cases noted in Ops Selamat

KUCHING: “Ops Selamat” held in conjunction with Christmas 2018 saw an increase of 13 road accidents compared to 2017.

This was revealed in a statement received recently from the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu.

There were 712 cases recorded from Dec 18. 2018 to Jan 1, 2019 compared to 699 cases in the corresponding period in 2017.

However, the 15-day operation also recorded a no change in fatal cases where 13 cases were recorded for both years.

The number of deaths showed a decrease of two from 17 in 2017 to 15 in 2018 which was a decrease of 11.8 percent. For the record, motorcyclists contributed the most deaths with seven followed by car drivers and passengers that also recorded seven deaths. The other death was a lorry driver.

Fatal accidents are mostly caused by the driver themselves, such as overtaking in an unsafe manner resulting in a collision, coming out from a junction without indicating, disobeying the speed limit and negligence.
