KUCHING: The Sarawak Basic Necessities Assistance (SKAS) programme has garnered widespread praise since its introduction by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the Sarawak Budget 2025 presentation in November.
Designed to alleviate the financial burden of vulnerable groups, SKAS offers annual financial aid ranging from RM250 to RM800 via SarawakPay.
This initiative aims to ensure that essential items such as rice and cooking oil remain accessible to those in need.
The programme targets Sarawakians with specific eligibility criteria to ensure aid reaches those most in need.
Households with a total income of RM5,000 or less will receive RM800 annually, while senior citizens without spouses and children, earning RM5,000 or less, are entitled to RM400.
Additionally, bachelors with an income of RM2,500 or less will qualify for RM250 per year.
The Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) recently conducted a public survey in the city, gathering views from recipients who expressed optimism about the programme’s impact.
For food vendor and high school graduate Mohd Nassaruddin, SKAS is a lifeline.
“The cost of living is high now, so this is good for bachelors like me to cover daily expenses and support my family,” he said.
A ‘kek lapis’ entrepreneur Sunita Abdullah highlighted the programme’s potential to support small businesses.
“I need financial aid to buy modals for my business because some items need rotating capital,” she shared.
Meanwhile, 79-year-old Mohamad Taha appreciated the programme’s focus on those without a steady income.
“This is good because it reduces expenses. For those without fixed income, it provides some relief,” he said.
The public can check their eligibility or find more details about SKAS starting Jan 1, 2025 by visiting https://sarawak.gov.my.
The financial aid will be disbursed through the S Pay Global e-wallet in the first quarter of 2025 and can be used at registered supermarkets and stores selling basic necessities.
