KUCHING: The roof of the covered basketball court at SJKC Chung Hua Batu Kawa here will undergo refurbishment over the next three months.

According to a statement by the Batu Kawa Service Centre, after about 20 years of exposure to the elements, the roof of the covered basketball court at the school has become severely rusted.

“Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has allocated RM250,000 through his Rural Transformation Project (RTP) fund for this initiative.

“The funds will be used to replace the entire roof of the covered basketball court, as well as repaint the structure’s beams, columns and flooring,” the centre said today.

It also mentioned that the renovation project will be implemented and supervised by the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), with the contractor selected through an open tender process.

“Today, the council officially handed over the project contract to the contractor.

“The refurbishment works will begin on April 7 and are scheduled to be completed by July 6, spanning a period of three months,” it said.

The covered basketball court at SJKC Chung Hua Batu Kawa is a key venue for events and sports activities in the Batu Kawa area.

It regularly hosts banquets organised by local associations and annual basketball tournaments run by sports clubs.

Residents also frequently use the court to play basketball in the afternoons and on weekends.

However, due to years of neglect, the current roof is not only heavily rusted but also has multiple leaks.

This has caused inconvenience, especially during rainy weather when banquets are being held.

The refurbishment follows a proposal raised by chairman of the school board, Kapitan Chai Min Sin, who wrote to Dr Sim to address the deteriorating condition of the court.

The proposal was swiftly acknowledged and approved.
