SIBU: The project site for the bridge connecting Sibu’s west bank to the town centre is still being identified.

According to Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, determining the landing site for the project is crucial.

“When building this bridge, the landing site is the most important because we have seen that the Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed several locations, and we are now in the final stages of finalising the site.

“Some sites are not suitable due to the need for a long landing,” he said.

He said this when speaking to reporters after the Hari Raya visit by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to his house in conjunction with Hari Raya today.

He assured that the bridge will still be built, but they still need time to finalise everything.

During the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Chinese New Year celebration on Feb 17, Abang Johari had approved the construction of the bridge.

Abang Johari said that the bridge will span 400 metres across Sungai Igan.

He also urged that a detailed plan be carried out, including exploring economic activities that could be developed in the area, such as rubber or paddy planting.

A task force committee, led by Dr Annua and Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang, will be established.
