BAU: In an effort to preserve the heritage of the people, a historical gallery will be built in the city this year at a cost of RM500,000.
Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh said the gallery will display the history of Siniawan including the existence of its community, not only of the Chinese but Malay and Bidayuh.
“It will be a tourism product apart from a display for the younger generation.
“We plan to further beautify Siniawan next year by building the RM10 million Siniawan Waterfront,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters at the Chap Goh Mei Open House, organised by the Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF), Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) here yesterday.
According to him, the pedestrian walkway in Siniawan will also be built at a cost of RM500,000.
“In addition, we will improve the sewerage system in Siniawan as well as beautify the roofs of the shops to make them more attractive.
“At last year’s Country Music Festival, it was able to attract 16,000 visitors in three days,” he said, adding the festival could well grow to be the biggest festival of its kind in the country.
The next Siniawan country music festival is slated for October this year.
On the Chap Goh Mei celebration in Siniawan, Miro said it was a unique procession as it was held in a small heritage town.
“Since 1880, the Chap Goh Mei parade has never failed to be held because the Chinese community here is very supportive of each other.
“In fact, they hold elections to determine the organising chairman every year and independently move on their own feet to raise funds,” he said.
According to him, 62 groups comprising of 500 participants attended the parade.
