KUCHING: Sarawak’s single water entity is expected to be operational in the second quarter of this year.

Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said that the preparations are currently focused on refining the operational model, human resources structure, salary schemes and other related aspects.

“The integration was approved by the State Cabinet Meeting (MMKN) last year and is projected to operate as a unified entity in the second quarter of this year.

“The single water entity will involve the combination of Kuching Water Board, Sibu Water Board, and Laku Management Sdn Bhd.

“At present, we are in the process of finalising its model options. What is important is that we are going to form one entity for efficiency of water supply in Sarawak in the near future. That is very important,” he told reporters on Monday.

He said that this new entity under the state government aims not only to enhance water supply management but also to ensure better staff welfare by restructuring and integrating the existing staff into the entity.

“Of course, the priority now is with the present staff. So, we will provide options. Options to all levels of officers and staff, who are involved in the three agencies, so that it is fair for them to make a choice. But, I can assure you, it is much better. The Board of Directors has already been established, now, only the transition process remains to be implemented.

“We will share more details with you later. My team and I are committed to ensuring a smooth and seamless transition,” he said.

He assured that the restructuring would not disrupt the current water supply operations for consumers.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) will continue to function as a department dedicated to providing water supply infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.

Moreover, he said that the plan for the development of Sarawak Space Industry Roadmap is expected to be completed by February and will be presented to the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for final details and further advice.

“We are meticulously planning to ensure that Sarawak’s aerospace industry aspirations are realised,” he said.

However, he declined to comment further on the matter, requesting all parties to await the official announcement from the Premier regarding this issue.
