LAWAS: Festive occasions are an opportunity for society to help less fortunate members of the community.
Recently, 108 single mothers and persons with disabilities (OKU) here received donations recently from the Bukit Sari Constituency Service Centre and the Lawas Chinese Association in conjunction with the Chinese New Year festive season.
Deputy Premier and Bukit Sari assemblyman Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan hoped the donation would bring joy to the recipients.
“The government is committed to improving the community’s wellbeing, especially he low-income group and the elderly; thus, various initiatives have been implemented,” he said.
He was speaking at the Lawas District Chinese New Year donation presentation ceremony organised by the service centre in collaboration with the Lawas Chinese Association here.
Awang Tengah said that among the initiatives implemented were aid programmes for the OKU and the introduction of the Kenyalang Gold Card to support the welfare of the elderly.
“Therefore, I urge the respective government agencies involved to provide information to the public on the criteria for aid applications.
“I hope every department responsible for implementing these policies will enlighten our community about the available assistance and the eligibility criteria for accessing various forms of aid.
“Similarly, as community leaders, we should know and be able to explain to the community so that they are informed about the assistance available,” he said.
On the programme, Awang Tengah said it is important as it served as a platform to foster closer ties among the community regardless of their background.
