KUCHING: Nurismazila Jamadil’s interest in operating a business began when she started following her mother selling ‘kuih-muih’ or traditional cakes and run her grocery store.

In due course, the 31-year-old single mother of five children from Kampung Semariang Batu, here got positive support from all her family members.

According to Nurismazila, she ventured into business around March 2016. In addition, she is also deeply interested to become an entrepreneur.

“I sell household items online for side income but I am more focused on my main business which is ‘Bestie Wantan’ on a full time basis, she told New Sarawak Tribune.

The ‘Bestie Wantan’ business is usually open from 7 am to 9 pm depending on the number of orders received for people who collect them at her home. She also accepts orders and makes deliveries on certain days only.

In addition, sometimes her close friends and the children helped her with the preparation of Bestie Wantan’s chicken after school activities. The rest she manages alone.

“The location of ‘Bestie Wantan’ is at my residence located in Kampung Semariang but I also make deliveries for customers.

“Many challenges I have gone through during my six years in business. Among them is the daily increasing cost of chicken filling, so with that, I have to reduce the quantity of ‘wantan’ but I maintain the price so that people who are less able can also taste it.

“In addition, if it rains making a delivery is also one of the challenges I have to face in this business. It’s not easy to face it alone, but in order to support my children, I have to face it,” she said.

The minimum price of wantan starts at RM6 for 15 pieces, RM10 for 25 pieces for boiled and fried ones and RM10 for 35 pieces for frozen wantan.

For customers who want to make reservations for birthdays, weddings and so on, she said there is no maximum rate because it all depends on the customer’s reservation.

“It has become a daily routine, in the morning after I finish taking care of the children before going to school, I will start cooking and making deliveries of customers’ orders. If the delivery is complete, I will stop by Mercie to buy the chicken filling and ingredients, at 7pm or 8pm,

“I will start washing and separating the skin from the chicken, then grind them into wantan fillings and wrap and store them in the refrigerator so that they can last a long time. That’s how the subsequent days are,” she said.

In addition to selling wantan, she is also a runner for traders who need this service. She does this extra work because she has to support her five children, including one child who has heart disease.

“I have always had the moral support, encouragement and positive moral advice from my family members, good friends and my former employer.

“Hopefully I can achieve my dream of obtaining a valid business license so that I can have a shop under my own name and be able to expand my business to all places to provide more comfort for my children to study, she said.

She also has some advice for small traders like herself.

“A simple message for small traders like me who are struggling, no matter how hard up we are, no matter how great the test is, go through it with perseverance and sincerity so that we always get blessings in this business world.

“And if you fail, don’t despair because that is normal in selling and buying. What is important is that we instil in ourselves that as long as we are able and healthy, try to improve ourselves,” she said.
