SINGAPORE: Singapore will introduce a Bill at the next Parliament sitting on May 4 to enable civil and Muslim marriages to be solemnised remotely using technology during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We can expect to start this process from mid-May onwards, if the law is enacted,” said Minister for Social and Family Development, Desmond Lee in his Facebook page yesterday.
Lee noted that if all goes well, the ministry hopes to extend this as an option to more couples even after the Circuit Breaker period.
Singapore is entering its fourth week next week for its tighter circuit breaker measures to curb Covid-19 transmission. It ends on June 1.
“We will also resume solemnisations that are conducted in person, when it is safe to do so,” he said.
Lee said currently under the circuit breaker period, marriage solemnisations for civil and Muslim marriages have had to be postponed since they need to be conducted physically. – Bernama
