KUCHING: The public is urged to prioritise personal health and take precautions against respiratory infections, particularly in crowded and enclosed spaces.

The Health Ministry (MoH) said that acute respiratory infections (ARIs) remain prevalent within the community, necessitating constant vigilance.

“These infections, caused by viruses or bacteria, are highly contagious, spreading through airborne droplets and contact,” said MoH in a statement.

MoH noted that the seasonal rise in ARI cases observed annually is consistent with global trends, particularly in countries with winter seasons.

“As part of our preventive measures, we are continuously monitoring the situation both locally and internationally, including the prevalence of COVID-19, Influenza, and other respiratory infections,” it said.

Regarding Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), the ministry clarified that it is not a new disease in Malaysia and is not a notifiable disease under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

“Data from MOH Public Health and hospital laboratories revealed 327 hMPV positive samples in 2024, compared to 225 in 2023,” it added.

The ministry advised individuals travelling to high-risk countries to:

  • Frequently wash hands with soap or use hand sanitizers.
  • Practice good coughing etiquette by covering the mouth and nose with tissues or face masks.

Wear face masks, especially in crowded or enclosed spaces, particularly for high-risk individuals or those exhibiting symptoms.

“Anyone experiencing prolonged or worsening symptoms should promptly seek medical attention at the nearest health facility,” it urged.
