KUCHING: Sibu’s rugby team has quickly emerged as the tournament favourites at the UNIMAS 10s 2024, held at the rugby field here yesterday and will go on today (Dec 1).

The Sibu ruggers dominated their opening matches with a narrow 14-12 win over KRFC and a commanding 34-0 victory in their second game, against SPRC X Samarahan.

Despite their strong performance, the team is staying humble and focused as they prepare for their next challenge.

“We didn’t expect to be considered favourites after just two games, but it feels good. It’s a testament to the hard work the team has put in.

“However, we can’t get too comfortable. We’re still very much the underdogs, and we’ll approach every match with the same discipline and determination,” said Fariedzuan, a key player in Sibu’s backline.

The team’s opening victory against KRFC was a hard-fought battle, with both teams exchanging blows throughout the match.

“KRFC is no easy team; they have national players and a lot of experience. We knew it would be tough, but we stuck together and came out on top,” he added.

In their second match, Sibu displayed their full potential, overwhelming their opponents with a 34-0 scoreline.

“It was a great performance, but we know we can’t get complacent. Our focus is still on improving and executing our game plan.

“We’ve only trained together for two days, so we’re still figuring things out,” the Melanau lad from Mukah said.

With their impressive run, Sibu’s rugby team isn’t taking anything for granted, even after a hard-fought 10-5 win over WOG Junior in the Cup quarterfinals.

“But we know our strengths, and we’ll stick to the plan. Every match is a new challenge, and we’re ready for it,” the 25-year-old noted.

Fariedzuan, a police officer by profession, balances his duties with his passion for rugby.

As the tournament progresses, Sibu’s rugby team has their eyes set firmly on the prize, they are determined to show that their rise to the top is no fluke.

“We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re ready to take on whatever comes next.
