SIBU: Sibu Member of Parliament Oscar Ling Chai Yew’s Service Centre marked the end of 2024 by distributing New Year food baskets to 180 underprivileged families from 18 churches within the Sibu parliamentary constituency.

The handover ceremony was held at a local supermarket in Jalan Kuda.

Ling said the initiative was made possible through the MP’s allocation for underprivileged families.

He expressed his gratitude to the Methodist Churches from West and North Districts for providing the list of families in need and assisting with the delivery of the gift baskets.

Ling speaks at the event.

While commending the church’s dedication and efforts in social care, he encouraged other community groups, associations, and religious organisations to emulate their actions.

He also highlighted that the Malaysian government spends RM4 billion annually on treating diabetes, which poses a significant economic burden on the country.

“Adding the costs of managing hypertension, high cholesterol, and other illnesses further increases this financial strain. Thus, I urge citizens to take responsibility for their health by controlling their diets, exercising more, and maintaining good health, which can help reduce family economic burdens.

In addition, he said his Service Centre recently provided medical assistance funds under the Care for Children with Cancer Programme 3.0.

A total of 17 families with children battling cancer received financial aid as well as educational toys as gifts.

He added children eligible for cancer medical aid and gifts must be aged 18 or below, have an address within the Sibu parliamentary constituency as per their identity card, and submit updated medical records and a copy of their identity card.

Emphasising that companionship and care are the best remedies for sick children, Ling hoped the programme will spread love and compassion, raising greater awareness and care for children with cancer.

“This marks the third time my service centre has distributed financial aid and gifts to children battling cancer,” he added.
