SIBU: The bridge connecting Sibu’s west bank to the town centre might resemble London Bridge, following Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s nod to a proposal by Nangka assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
“The Muara Lassa and Batang Rajang bridges have just been completed, and now Dr Annuar wants to build another one.

“The people of Sibu do not want to be left behind—they want a bridge like the one in London, connecting Sibu’s west bank to the town centre.
“It is not just an ordinary bridge—it can open, just like London Bridge. Well, I can say we approved it,” he said in his speech at the Sibu Division Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering here, last night (Apr 4).
Abang Johari added that if the vision becomes a reality, the bridge will serve as a catalyst for economic growth, particularly in the agricultural sector.
“I will look for the budget to build the bridge we’ve just discussed—hopefully, it will become a reality.
“If that happens, the area’s economic potential will increase, including in agriculture, as the land has a long-standing tradition in rubber tapping and farming.
“That is why I did not hesitate to agree. Let us all pray for the construction of this ‘London Bridge’—or whatever we decide to call it—perhaps the ‘Sibu Bridge’,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Annuar described the proposed structure as an iconic bridge that would elevate Sibu’s appeal.
“With the Kampung Datu Lama redevelopment project underway, and the proposed iconic bridge, the area is bound to become a tourist attraction and significantly boost the local economy,” he said.
